Summary

We hare analyzed our experience with 94 consecutive patients older than 65 years of age (mean age 72.2) operated for intracranial meningiomas at our Neurosurgical Service over a period of 17 years. Multiple factors including age, clinical symptoms, location and size of tumor and histological features were evaluated retrospectively and their possible role on the final prognosin war analyzed.

Postoperative complications either (neurological or medical) ocurred in 31.8% of the cases. Surgical mortality was 6.3%.

We conclude that removal of intracranial meningiomas in the elderIy is associated with a moderate morbidity and mortality rate. However, age alone is not a factor preventing proper surgical treatment of meningioma in the elderly.
