Summary

The authors report the clinical and radiological presentation in 140 head injury patients diagnosed of diffuse axonal injury during the period 1990–1994. The clinical and epidemiological aspects and their influence on the final outcome are described. Most patients were males of ages between 35 and 60 years, who had suffered traffic road accidents. Nevertheless, the age of the patient and the mechanism of trauma were not associated with a poorer outcome, while pupillary ubnormalities and the worst G.C.S. score, did. A variety of clinical and epidemiological factors and their relationship with G.C.S. and with the final outcome were studied.
