Summary

Transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) is a widely noninvasive method of monitoring real-time changes of blood flow signals in central nervous system disorders.

Flow velocity is proportional to the volume of cerebral blood flow and inversely related to the cross-sectional area of the insonated vessel.

The object of this study is to describe the basic methodology, the indications and limitations of transcranial Doppler and the indications in craniocerebral injuries and for the detection of vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Key words:
Head injuries
Hydrocephalus
Intracranial pressure
Subarachnoid hemorrhage
Transcranial Doppler ultrasound
Vasoespasm
